Charlene Hughes works in the many media that fiber art offers. She is particularly interested in quilting, painting on fabric and designing. Many of her pieces are from traditional quilt designs that have been updated by design, use of unusual materials and embellishment and thus are now considered "contemporary art."
Charlene Hughes has taught classes in fiber arts for the Hawaii Quilt Guild, the Maui Quilt Guild and the Hawaii Quilt Research Project. She has been an active member of the arts community in Hawaii for many years, exhibiting original work in invitational, juried and open art shows. Her work has been purchased by individuals and is in several private collections as well as in the Hawaiii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. She has been accepted in the prestigious juried shows of Art Maui, Artists of Hawaii, Hawaii Craftsmen and the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Hughes is the founding member and first president of the non-profit Maui Quilt Guild which now has 150 members. She donates quilts to raise money for various organizations such as the Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation, as a way of "giving back to the community." |
